Joan brought up many points on domestic abuse that I was not aware of, I thought her presentation was very informative on the circumstances, trends, and treatment options of domestic abuse. Joan was at one point in an abusive relationship, and her experience helps her treat and give advice to the people she represents. Joan is on a very busy schedule, helping and giving advice to people all over the Philadelphia area who are in abusive relationships. Joan often appears in court cases as a criminal court advocate to oversee correct punishment for victims and or abusers.
While watching the video I learned a lot about how and why abuse takes place along with why some people choose to stay with their abuser. Most abusive men are loving during the early parts of a relationship, and the circumstances that lead to males abusing their partners were pregnancy, suspicion of their partner cheating on them, and the males being overly possessive. I also learned that the criminal justice system only recently started cracking down on domestic abuse. In the early 1900's it was legal to beat your wife as long as the width of the stick you were using was no thicker than your thumb. Another old law was that the police officers actually had to witness the abuse taking place, and the criminal justice system treated domestic violence situations as a different set of circumstances because it was between husband and wife. Today however, article 27-11 states if a person says that they are a victim of domestic violence, the police can arrest the accused abuser...
