Society is a complex structure that is broken up into many different levels. There are three apparent classes within our society working class, middle class, and then the wealthier upper class. Although there are three defined levels of class in our society not everyone fits perfectly in these categories, they usually fall somewhere in between on the continuum.
I found it interesting that the author spoke a lot about religion when referring to social class. The fact that those from the working class believed that class was instrumental in bringing them closer to God was quite compelling. In their church they were taught that "the poor were chosen and closer to the heart of the divine because their lives embodied the wisdom of living simply" (38). They felt it was important to have class to separate those who are going to heaven and those who are not, "rich people were rarely allowed into heaven. God had given them a paradise of bounty on earth and they had not shared" (26). This is an interesting point of view. Why is it that some are born into riches and some are born into rags?..
