Character Relationships in Hawthorne
In his short stories, Hawthorne anticipates the three major adult character in The Scarlet Letter.
The character Ethan Brand in the short story "Ethan Brand" anticipates the character of Roger Chillingworth in The Scarlet Letter. Ethan Brand had a heart of stone and had lost all touch with humanity. Brand became a heartless fiend. Roger Chillingworth became so obsessed with getting revenge on Arthur Dimmesdale that the idea began to eat away at his heart. The townspeople even noticed the malice that raged in the old man's eyes and that was discernable on his countenance. Chillingworth lost all touch with humanity and even realizes what he has become and call himself a fiend. Chillingworth commits the Unpardonable Sin that Ethan Brand went on a search for. Many times in The Scarlet Letter things are said by various characters expressing that Chillingworth's sin was worse than the sin of Dimmesdale and Prynne. Roger Chillingworth is described as shriveling up after Dimmesdale dies because he has nothing with which to feed his life...
