Fear: The Enemy of the Island
“There is nothing we have to fear, but fear itself. ... If only the deserted children in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies knew that the only thing to be afraid of was fear, maybe lives would have been saved. Fear makes people act differently, whether from the fear of economic failure, from terrorists attacking, or even the fear of not surviving. Fear was the evil that took over these children’s innocent souls and turned them into uncontrollable savages.
In the past and even the present, fear is used in our society against us. Some governments use fear to keep in control of their citizens. They use fear to stay in power, and if the disobey their government, and then their justice system tortures them. ... Ironically, Jack is the first to become a savage and breaks the rules after fear had overcome him. The actual fear that the children were terrified of was brought to life when a little one claimed he saw a “beastie”.
