The book Hunt for Red October takes place on American and Russian nuclear ballistic submarines somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The time is set in the mid 1980's, after the end of the cold war.
Captain Marco Ramius is an esteemed Soviet Captain who has taken out the first of each of the last 6 classes of submarine for the Russian Navy. He was put in charge of the new October class of subs. These subs have been fitted with an ultra silent drive which would make it possible to sneak past anything the Americans have to track them. Ramius takes his boat out with a secret voyage in mind, to defect to the United States, bringing with him the new submarine. The Americans have sent out an analyst named Jack Ryan to help the Americans find out the purpose of the Russian Submarines in the Atlantic Ocean. Jack Ryan is familiar with Ramius and has a difficult task convincing the Captains of the American Submarines not to destroy the Russian Submarines. A lot of tension occurs on both submarines, and a great deal of mistrust and contention leads to the successful defect from Russia while saving the October class submarine.
