Casablanca is a war film set during World War II in unoccupied French Morocco. The film centre around a man named Rick and how is character evolves in the course if the film, from being cold and unfeeling to being compassionate.
At the start of the film, Rick is shown as a cynical and unfeeling man. He did not help to Ugarte, a member of the French resistance, who handed Rick the travel visas for safe keeping when he was fleeing from the Germans. Rick is also shown to be a calculating person and a person who dislikes Germans. He shows is cunning when captain Renault informs him if victor Lazlo. He also shows his dislike for Germans by tearing up a German man's check and refusing to accept Germans into his caf.
Even though Rick is shown to be a cynical and unfeeling man, Rick still has some principles when he refused to sell Sam his pianist to Ferrari, another caf owner.
We learn that underneath the cynical shell, Rick has a sentimentalist side and a good heart. From his conversation with captain Renault, we learn that Rick fought in Spain against the fascists, and took great risks when he ran guns to Ethiopia...
