Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson was one of the most important poets of the mid 1800's. Emily Dickinson lived in Amherst Massachusetts where other famous poets lived at that time. Emerson and Whitman were contemporaries of hers. Emily Dickinson was well educated and her family was fairly wealthy. Even though her family was involved in the church Emily was never extremely religious. Emily Dickinson never wanted a lot of material things and was never married so she concentrated on her gardens and a few friends who she wrote letters to. Her father died when she was 44, she went into seclusion and became known as "the nun of Amherst".
After Emily Dickinson's death in 1886, over 1,700 poems where found in her dresser drawer. Only 24 of the poems had titles and only seven of them were published in her life time. The first poem she ever wrote was embroidered on a sampler...
