In his essay, "The More Factor," Laurence Shames writes, "The ethic of decency has been upstaged by the ethic of success"(58). What Shames means is that in our competitive, money hungry, society of America today, many people are paying less attention to good ethics and morals in order to be successful. Americans will do anything or say anything to make money, especially when it relates to culture, businesses, and political issues in America today.
In today's society, sex sells. Take the way we market our pop singers for example. Would Britney Spears have nearly as much money and be so popular just due to the fact that she's a good singer? The answer is no. She is marketed to the world as a sex symbol. After all, not very many normal men would admit that they like her just because they like how she sings. Most men like her because they think she's hot...
