From first books of the Old Testament to the Books of Gospels, people put different meanings and definitions to the word ransom. For the people living in the times of the Old Testament it was a law, that was used by layers and according to what people lived and thought that's that one and only right way. From the times of Gospels till now ransom got more deep meaning. Deep in peoples hearts and souls. It is began to be a spiritual word.
If person is in debt, he sells land or himself to an Israelite or a foreigner. You have no way back until your relative will be able to redeem you, to buy you back. Also you could be free if you are able to buy yourself out. It was thought that if you are selling yourself, you are in Satan's hands. This is the law for ransom that was in the Old Testament...
