In every situation we are responsible for our actions, and every individual has a unique characteristic personality. Conflict situations offer each of us an opportunity to choose a style for responding to the conflict. The five main types of conflict management styles are collaboration and problem solving, competition and authoritative, avoidance, accommodation and compromising. Such styles reflect our unique wants, needs, and values. In conflicts, there are specific patterns that can be identified in relation to how individuals deal each challenge. No one style is inherently better than the other, and no one type can be applied to all conflict situations. It is important for individuals to identify their strengths and weaknesses associated with conflict management, and understand the style in which they are most skilled. The key to effective conflict prevention and management is to choose the conflict management style that is appropriate for the conflict that business and employees are attempting to resolve.
