While there are certainly many more varieties of English, American and British English are the two varieties that are mostly used around the world. British and American English both have a recognized standard form and both are equally acceptable in Academic English. However, American English and British English share a lot many differences. The major differences that they share are in spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary and the usage around the world.
In an academic context, the most noticeable difference between British English and American English is spelling. American spelling tends to reflect how a word is pronounced, whereas the British spelling tends to reflect grammatical implications. Americans spell words such as parlor, license, organize and fulfill, while British spell these words as parlour, licence, organise and fulfil. Both American and British spelling are acceptable, but one must be consistent, at least when using the same word.
