Ernest J. Gaines has written six novels and many stories, that consist of A Lesson Before Dying, In my Father's House, A Long say in November, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Bloodline, Of Love and Dust, Catherine Carmier, and A Gathering of Old Men. Ernest J. Gaines is a wonderful writer he does not seem to write from a bias stand point. Mr. Gaines books seem to all be based around the same time period and all have some kind of involvement with civil rights. "Gaines knows how to tell a story, he writes with humor, a strong sense and a compassionate understanding of people who find themselves in opposing positions". When he writes he give a sense of realness, that you can feel. The emotions of the people paint a perfect picture of what they are seeing. Not only in A Gathering of Old Men but also in A Lesson Before Dying does Gaines try to teach his readers a lesson that is valuable in life...
