Benefits of Being a Utilitarian
Taking into account the many immoral activities that are conducted everyday in this society, one would think the world would be a better place if people always did the morally right thing to do. Society today seems to stray away more and more from the morals that once were the foundation of human civilizations. As a result, the destructive path that society has taken is because of the lack of morals. However, in certain situations being a Kantian is not always best. In some situations, abiding by human morals does not always benefit society and one has to take on a utilitarian outlook.
If I was a doctor and had found out that an unconscious patient of mine had a rare disease fighting antibodies in him or her, I would definitely take a pint of the person's blood if it would lead to curing several diseases affecting thousands of individuals-even though the patient would have never approved of it. In this specific situation, it would be very selfish of the person to refuse donating his or her blood for research, which could lead to the discovery of ways to cure debilitating diseases. Why would anyone not want to help the world if they have the power to do so? The problem of many incurable diseases and illnesses has existed since the beginning of man. We have made strides towards mitigating some of the diseases out there but we are far from curing them...
