Though she preferred a room downstairs in the mansion, John insisted that she rest upstairs in a former nursery room that is spacious, sunlit, has bars on the windows, and horrid yellow wallpaper, “stripped off in two places, with a hideous, chaotic pattern. ... He laughs at her distaste for, and growing anxiety over the wallpaper, and denies her request to repaper the room because soon she will want to change everything else as well. ...
The simplicity and straightforwardness of the narrator’s character and plight begins to shift as she takes it upon herself to make some sense of the wallpaper. A recurrent pattern in the wallpaper looks like a broken neck and two upside-down eyes staring at her. ... The narrator thinks she sees a “strange” figure in the wallpaper’s pattern, making her feel watched over by the wallpaper much as she feels John and Jennie watch over her. ... The wallpaper is proving to be stimulating and she spends hours studying the confusing, disordered patterns. She reverses her initial feeling of being watched by the wallpaper, and begins actively studying it to decode its meaning.
She believes there are things in the wallpaper only she knows about. ... “The bars in her own room help her cause,” and believes she, too, is trapped in the wallpaper. ... She watches the female figure in the wallpaper by the moonlight, as this is the time when the narrator understands more about the trapped figure. ... ” He then sleeps, but she stays up for many hours starring at the wallpaper.
As the narrator’s expressions become choppier and more paranoid, she feels everyone else in the mansion is trying to figure out the meaning of the wallpaper, thus she “cultivates deceit” as she frequently pretends to be asleep during the day to ensure privacy.
