Our system of checks and balances
Our system of checks and balances has been effective in protecting our freedoms and providing a well-balanced delineation between the three branches of government. It has been effective through political parties, the power of the people, and the limit of power allowed to one branch.
The political parties have, in fact, provided their own check to the system of checks and balances. The parties have caused a split in each of the three branches of government, and by doing this we have limited the power of each branch. For example, if we had a democratic president and the legislative branch was partial to republicans, the legislative branch would have limited power by not being in agreement with the executive branch. The same would go for each of the other branches in respect to one another. This has helped the system of checks and balances by causing the power of these checks to be either more powerful or weak depending on the situation in the branch.
People have affected the system of checks and balances by playing a role in each of the branches of government. The people elect the president who than has the power to veto a bill, which is quite possibly the strongest power. The president may appoint federal judges, and pardon people as he sees fit...
