Greyhound Racing Industry Turns Blind Eye to Abuses
Greyhound racing is a high-profit gambling industry. Dog tracks are often subsidized by state governments, because of possible profits gleaned by the tourism industry. However, in many situations, the tracks and owners are not closely monitored, and inhumane treatment and abusive living conditions abound.
Greyhounds are incredibly gentle, people-pleasing dogs. They make wonderful pets and companions. However, most greyhounds never get the chance to become pets. An estimated 20,000 greyhounds are put down each year once their racing career ends. Most greyhounds stop racing at the age of two. If they were allowed to live, these dogs would live to be 10 or 12 years old. The greyhound racing industry, however, does not care about the lives of the greyhounds or their comfort level once their racing career is over...
