The world in which we live in is a reality that boggles the mind of millions, but the world of fantasy is a place where everything can fit together as you like and everything makes sense. For many these worlds are separated by a barrier that they can pass through as they please, but for others that these worlds are unidentifiable. The short story "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" by James Thurber is about a man (Walter Mitty) who finds himself battling to stay in one of the two worlds listed above. The author brings you to believe that Walter is in a reality where he lives a normal life with a wife out in the country. However, as you near the end of the story you find Walter in a reality of war and death. James Thurber used Walter in many ways to depict his ideas of reality and fantasy with his imagination, his characteristics, and feelings.
In the beginning of the story Walter is described as a captain of a plane ready to enter a hurricane. As you read on you find that Walter may also be just a normal person with a large imagination. The use of "may" in the previous sentence is because the reader doesn't' know which world is fantasy or reality. At the end of the story Walter is found lined up for execution which in turn conflicts with the reader's thinking that his life in the country is really reality...
