Exegesis
Mark 8:27-30 marks the beginning of Jesus' journey to Jerusalem, where the Romans would later crucify him. Jesus and his disciples are moving on to the villages of Caesura Philippi from Bethsaida mark the beginning of the pericope. Jesus then confronts and challenges the disciples about his true identity. Following the confrontation is the reaction of the disciples. Peter, one of the disciples responds to Jesus with the confession of who the crowd thinks Jesus is. Peter tells Jesus that some say he is Elijah, John the Baptist, and one of the prophets. Jesus proceeds to ask Peter and the disciples who they think he is. Peter responds to this question, declaring he is the Messiah. Jesus then reminds the disciples to not tell anyone about him.
