The Rise of Western Europe to Global Hegemony The rise
of the Western European domination during the 19th
century was greatly influenced by industrialism. The
bigger nation-states of England, Russia, and France were
world dominators. They were able to control their
stakes through direct rule, with governments in place
from the home country, through military presence, and
also indirectly through trade routes. This paper will
deal with how these few nations were able to gain
control of so many nations, and for so long.
England England has always been known for her vast
empire. It has been said that the sun never sets on the
English Empire. At one time this statement was very
true. England ruled over many countries in the 19th
century, and the early part of the 20th century. Some
of her conquests included Canada, Australia, New
Zealand, India, the Ottoman Empire, Iran, China, and
coastal territories along the Indian Ocean and Africa.
