I am a seventeen year old senior at Beavercreek High School in Beavercreek, Ohio. For my senior scholarship government class, we were assigned a project to view a law at either the local, state, or federal level, and make what we felt were appropriate changes to the law. I decided that I would research Ohio's Driving Under the Influence Laws. In my opinion, the punishment for theses crimes is not near strict enough. I feel that the state of Ohio needs to take action in reducing the number of deaths caused by driving under the influence. A simple slap on the wrist is clearly not enough punishment. If our current laws were sufficient, we would not be seeing the high number of repeat offenders.
In the state of Ohio, it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. Refusal to take a chemical test to determine the alcohol and/or drug content of your blood results in a one to five year suspension depending on prior offenses...
