Setting: Weekly Team Conference

Every Thursday I hold a conference call with my team of Bell telephone associates. The associates or workers are unionized craft technicians who have a bargained for contract. Management employees (non-unionized) must study and learn the labor contract because nearly every aspect of how one manages their teams is subject to its rules. Last August the company and the union signed a five-year contract, which greatly reduced the anxiety normally felt by management and the workers when a contract is about to expire. I have seven people that report directly to me. The size of the group is relatively small which enables everyone to get more of my personal attention. Another characteristics of my group besides size are the levels of skill and experience. The technicians have anywhere from two years with the company to over thirty. As far as their gender is concerned, two of my seven associates are female. My direct reports are also all Caucasians although the rest of the company is racially very diverse...
