GLORY
In the movie Glory, the 54th regiment of Massachusetts had to overcome many obstacles on their way to fight on the Civil War battlefield. The leader was General Robert Gould Shaw and his regiment not only fought in the war but had to fight politics, racists, and many more things just to get on the field. The Regiment was made up of black soldiers, some were Northern freemen and some were escaped slaves. This regiment was the first black regiment to fight for the North in the Civil War. Fighting in the war wasn't so easy also, the men of the 54th Regiment had to prove themselves worthy of the freedom for which they fighting for, and the respect of their fellow white soldiers. Here is a little bit about the movie and some ways the 54th regiment overcame some of these barriers and fought in the battle.
At the beginning of the movie General Shaw is fighting in a battle, and manages to survive despite heavy Union losses. He is disturbed with the violence of the war, and returns home to recover from his wounds. From there Shaw is recruited to lead the newly formed black regiment. Although he has retained his abolitionist opinions about them he still has doubts about the capability of black troops...
