In the play Equus, a young man by the name of Alan Strang had his mind pulled in conflicting directions by two different forces. Ever since Alan was a young boy, he has been fascinated by horses. Due to society's demanding nature, Alan is forced to gain their acceptance, but at the same he worships a different god. At night Alan finds himself worshipping the god Equus, however, Alan can no longer deal with this cognitive dissonance. Alan must either adhere to society or be true to himself. The decision that Alan is faced with one demonstrates difference between society's belief and an individual's belief.
Earlier in Alan's life, he had the opportunity to ride a horse at sea. This experience uplifts his spirit. He is so enlightened by it that he decides to choose horses as his own god. Alan gradually and increasingly becomes obsessed with his new god and turns it into his own personal religion...
