As the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes, psychology has made important contributions to the understanding of stress. The publication of numerous psychological papers regarding the causes and effects of stress has made it an issue of growing concern amongst many Canadians. In this paper I will outline the different psychological perspectives concerning the causes, effects and treatments of stress. I will examine each perspective methodically by separating and studying their interrelations. Through this close look at biological, cognitive, behaviourist, psychoanalytical and humanist perspectives, I will illustrate a complex yet complete range of possible explanations and coping strategies. This paper I will demonstrate, through a series of student life scenarios, how the best coping technique is to use a flexible strategy when choosing a coping method.
But first in order to understand the various psychological perspectives of stress we must first look at the subject in broader terms. Stress is described as the process by which we perceive and respond to certain events, which we appraise as threatening or challenging (Myers, 2002). When perceived as challenges, stress can bring positive effects, arousing and motivating us to conquer problems.
