Society, Lead Pellets, and Fiction
The story "Harrison Bergeron" has an interesting theme because members of the society are made "equal." This is done by the government, which issues "handicaps" to members of this society who would, otherwise, have an unfair advantage over the rest of the population. This is important to the theme because it gives a negative perspective of equality that most people overlook. A society that enforces the kind of equality system this one does, will never grow or develop any further then it currently is.
There is a couple in the story that are the predominate characters. They had a son who was taken from them because he was too superior to the others in the society. There was no handicap great enough to stifle his superiority, so he was sentenced to death. This shows the cultural differences in this society in comparison to ours today. Our culture praises people with superior qualities, while this one punishes its patron's excellence. This brings one and all to the same level of average...
