Chocolat is about a woman named Vianne Rocher and her daughter Anouk. All throughout her childhood, Vianne and her mother wandered around Europe, rarely staying in one place longer than a few months. Vianne's mother was very superstitious. She read tarot cards almost daily, and based most of her decisions upon their predictions. Through all her wanderings, she was running from a "black man" in the cards. He represented all the evil in her life, and took the physical form of a priest in one village that had tried to convince her to give Vianne up. She refused, and left the village, but was always running. She finally decided to leave Europe entirely and go to New York City. There, she was hit and killed by a Taxi in the streets.
By this time Vianne was an adult, so after her mother died she continued wandering on her own...
