The Goths: A Misunderstood People
Barbarians are considered a savage and uncultured group of people, but this is not always true and many groups that were considered barbarians are actually not. The Goths are one case of these misunderstood people. They were not savage; but they were very cultured in fact. The Goths were not barbaric in any sense not even when they went to war with other various
cultures.
The Goths were Germanic and probably originated out of Scandinavia. At first they moved about from land to land until they found a place in southern Russia where they settled and then it became known as their "homeland." "The Goths lived peacefully in the homeland most of their early history. They farmed, raised livestock, and set up trade shops with other Gothic communities"(Watson 1 of 4). The Goths did not seem to have such tendencies as the commonly defined barbaric groups and were said to be one of the "most peaceful people on Earth".
