The snowboarding industry has been one of the great growth stories of the last three decades. Starting from a very low base in 1975, sales of snowboards have consistently achieved double digit growth year after year. The number of snowboarders since 1988 has grown from 1,300,000 to 3,600,000 in 1998. In 1998 snowboarders accounted for 21 percent of visitors to winter sports resorts, a growth rate of 20.7 percent since 1994.
