John Pilger, a well known political journalist creates his documentary, Breaking the Silence - Truth and Lies in the War on Terror, to strike a chord with the audiences of westernised countries and highlight the inhumane punishments and acts of violence that are carried out on innocent civilians in war torn countries. ...
The beginning of the documentary uses symbolic codes of black, white and grey still shots to create a depressing mood for the viewer showing images of the victims of war and their surroundings in ruins. Adding to this atmosphere is sombre music and a juxtaposition of Tony Blairs voice saying that this is a "fight for freedom, fight for justice" and President Bushs statement that the victims of war will receive "food, medicine, supplies and freedom," by contrasting these grandiose remarks with photographs of what is actually happening in reality we are given a snap shot of life in the present, what type of people are governing the world and the repercussions their involvement is having on the lives of many. ... America sees this as a way of justifying the terror attacks on September 11, in this way America is seen as just as much as a terrorist country than those they accuse of being terrorists. ... " Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst calls these people "the crazies," there is footage of Donald Rumsfield shaking hands with Saddam Hussein, evidence of the corruption of the government and further establishing for the viewer the political nature of war. ... Although Kristol is becoming uncomfortable with the facts before him Pilger goes on to list and comment on the effect of war and its consequences for the lives of many. ... Reed Brody goes on to say that the people trained in the School of America and other US institutions that teach their students about arms and terror, have no assimilation to the US government and the disasters that happened in Panama and El Salvador. ... Andrew Wilkie, an Australian Intelligence Officer comments on the "serious dishonesty" whereby hundreds of soldiers and victims are being killed paying the price for a fictitious war. ... America contradicted what it said earlier in 2001 to create a war not so much for the retrieval of weapons but more so to continue their "hidden agenda of control of oil supplies. ... " Responding conclusively McGovern says it was 95% charade, killing thousands of people of an unprovoked war. ...
While Jo Wilding, a Human Rights Observer in Baghdad retells the horror of war (that there is not enough anaesthetic, that gouges of flesh were taken out of a little boys leg etc. ... Rita Lasar likens this situation to the similar administration of the war between the US and al Quada and Bushs remarks that "God is on our side. ...
There is a repeat of the black and white still shots further highlighting the uncharitable and intolerant attitudes that the US has shown the despondent and dispirited people of war. ...
In conclusion, the documentary Breaking the Silence - Truth and Lies in the War on Terror positions the viewer to side with Pilger through his use of film techniques and credible sources.
