ethnic minorities experience lower levels of chronic disease and
other health problems, even in the face of higher poverty rates and
other risks to health. This suggests that much can be learned from
these groups that will benefit all Americans. Positive health characteristics
that certain ethnic minority groups possess include:
Better ways of coping with arthritis pain, Better health over the life span for infants over the first year of life, and Better protection from depression.
The Health Care WorkforceIn addition, greater diversity among
psychologists, physicians, and other health professionals ensures that:
Health needs of our diverse nation are addressed through a greater understanding of the cultural competencies important for the delivery of quality health care; Research will better illuminate the health needs and strengths of ethnic minority communities; More health care professionals will be available to work in ethnic minority and medically underserved communities; and All health care providers, including nonminorities, are better equipped to address the health care needs of an increasingly diverse population.
The Historical Origins of Affirmative Action
Historically, affirmative action involved voluntary and
mandatory efforts by federal, state, and local governments,
private employers, and schools to combat discrimination and
foster fair hiring and advancement of qualified individuals.
The initial origin was a recognition that practices in the past
did not guarantee such fairness, and that there was evidence
for discriminatory practices.
