Weighted Grades- Too Heavy for High School?
"School administrators, parents, teachers and students are struggling to develop fair and equitable grading systems for their districts. However, what is fair and equitable" (Downs 7)? The system of weighted grades gives more points for higher grades in honors and advanced placement (AP) classes than for similar grades in less rigorous courses. The weighted grading system is catching on nationwide, over half of the high schools in the United States are currently implementing them (Downs 7). The other portion of the high schools that are not using weighted grades complain that there is not a set standard for which classes to "weight" and how heavily they should be "weighted." Although, there is an existing scale for those high schools that do weight grades. A state or national standard should be devised to set a base in which all schools can determine the classes that should be considered honors or AP. When computing a student's grade point average (GPA) using the weighted grading system, different school systems may assign from four to eight points for an "A" earned in a comparable AP class (Downs 7). The ranging point scale shows the variability of "weighting grades" among the high schools in the nation, thus proving that there needs to be a general basis for all schools using weighted grades...
