Tears, Idle Tears Essay Elizabeth Bowen has written a compelling short story about an unhappy relationship between an immature, sensitive boy and his mother who portrays an arrogant personality. Elizabeth Bowen created the character of Mrs. Dickinson as a cruel, impatient, in considerate mother. She precisely described, how uncaring people can actually be. Mrs. Dickinson demonstrated various ways of cruelty towards Frederick. Throughout the short story of “Tears, Idle Tears,” not only is Mrs. Dickinson was heartless not only through her actions but through her ruthless words. Frederick being awfully emotional couldn’t keep from weeping through much of the story. During one part of the story his mother said to him, “You stay here and look at the duck till you’ve stopped that noise. Don’t catch me up till u have. No, I am really ashamed of you” (103). It depicts how cruel she can be, particularly to her sensitive, 7 year old son. Frederick was very wounded from his fathers’ death. To add to his grief, his mother makes remarks towards him in a tone, which attracts many people. She exclaims, “ You really haven’t got to be such a baby!” (101) Another circumstance in which Mrs.
