God and Religion
In the second chapter of Burr and Goldinger's book titeld Philosophy and Contemporary Issues the authors present various views concerning the enormous philosophical topic of the existence of God and the meaning of Religion. Obviously, there is much debate concerning this philosophical topic, and it seems that nearly every human has contemplated this topic, which speaks volumes as to its importance in terms of the human experience. Basically, this topic is concerned with whether, or not God exists, and the responsibility of humans if God does or does not exist. The idea of an all knowing, all loving and all powerful creator is generally the way God is perceived in Western thought. The dilemmas concerning this belief are various, but I will attempt to summarize them. The first is whether or not there is proof of the existence of this all knowing, all loving, and all powerful being. Burr and Goldinger present various philosophers some in favor of and some not in favor of the existence of God. For those who believe that the argument for God's existence is made, Burr and Goldinger then offer a philosophical view concerning God's attributes, whether or not he is all loving for example, and then the authors offer a discussion concerning the value and meaning of religion.
