SELF-AWARENESS
Stein Parbury states that nurses should not leave themselves behind when they enter a nursing practice setting because their aspects of personality such as feelings, beliefs, values and how they perceive themselves have a direct influence on interactions and relationships with patients (Stein Parbury, 2000, p.61). Nurses should realize that evaluation of patients does not only involve patients' personal characteristics but also their attitudes and interpersonal behaviour towards patients. So through self-awareness, nurses will be able to reflect on themselves and correct any negative actions towards patients that are needed to be revised.
So instead of denying and ignoring, nurses should try to challenge or alter their mistaken assumptions and judgments they have on their patients through becoming more aware of themselves. Consequently, the main purpose behind self-awareness is to encourage personal qualities, such as sincerity, congruency, and open interaction with patients.
According to Stein Parbury (2000, p. 62), reflection is an enthusiastic exploration of the individual and of one's conscience. Because one is encouraged to 'look on' their actions while engaged in clinical practice and to 'look back' after their experience. Also, to 'look forward' prior to their clinical experience...
