History and Functions of File Sharing
The Internet was born during the cold war in 1969 and was developed as a way of communication in case of a nuclear attack by the U.S. Department of Defence (DOD). It was such a successful tool of communication that it continued to survive and has now become part of our daily lives.
People use the Internet for a wide variety of reasons, from research to e-mail. It is different from other forms of media; it enables a person to communicate with each other, which involves the transferring of data as well as the sharing of files.
With so many files available on the Internet, It is hard to search website after website looking for that certain file or program. It could almost take hours before you come across a website that has "that certain Mp3". That is when the first peer-to-peer file sharing program was developed.
Napster was consequently developed in 1999 by a 19 year old university student; Shawn Fenning who wanted to create a domain from which anyone connected to the Internet could search and download their favorite songs from one another's computers...
