In life, people make all kind of mistakes, some of them are more severe than others, but they are all considered to be mistakes. Even though they are not realizing what they are doing, it is still a mistake. In literature term, this kind of mistake it is called Hamartia. What is Hamartia? In the NTCs Dictionary of Literary Terms by Kathleen Morner, define Hamartia as "the error misstep, fraility, or flaw that causes the downfall of a tragic Hero." Most of the time the protagonist is the one that makes this kind of flaw and at the end of the story, the character goes to an inferior place because of the mistake he did, in other words it is rejected. In both Oedipus the King and Hamlet by Socphocles and Shakespeare the protagonist presents and a Hamartia in order to avoid their destiny because of their thoughts and feelings on the situation. The purpose of this essay is to compare by analyzing how the Hamartia it is used in each tragedy.
