The issue of incarceration is one that is heatedly debated over. While one side will answer with a resounding YES, a second crowd will reply with a strong NO. Both sides may have reasonable grounds of claiming what is to be the future of Canadian punishment, but the latter has an undeniably stronger one. The prison systems of Canada are overcrowded, ineffective, and fail to accomplish what it sets out to do. The effectiveness of any type of punishment can be defined by the frequency of the application, the immediacy of application, and whether it is used in conjunction with positive reinforcement of pro-social behaviour (Henry). However, punishment is not without its downsides: avoidance or escape, alienation of those punished, aggressiveness, conditioning of punishers though rewarding them for behavioral change, and reproducing punishment behaviour in those punished (Henry). There is no question that prison is seen as a severe punishment for most people. Choo Choo! The clue train is coming and Canada is the last stop. Get on before it's too late...
