Walter Max Ulyate SISULU
Walter Sisulu was born on May 18 1912, the same year that the ANC was founded. to a poor family. He was brought up by his mother Alice Sisulu, a domestic worker. His father, Victor Dickenson was a white civil servant. Walter and his sister were brought up by their mother and uncle in a village called Engcobo in the Transkei. His uncle was the headman of his village, and Walter learned a great deal about the Xhosa culture and the laws of society.
Walter's schooling was done in the Anglican Missionary Institute in his village. He enjoyed his history lessons because he learned about Shaka, Mashoeshoe and General Mokanda. Another inspiring figure was David, from the story "David and Goliath"
As a boy Walter also visited a wise man Dr Rubusana, who founded the Native Congress. A lot of his political influences came from this man...
