Few people are natural born athletes. Most people train long and hard to excel in sports competitions. Weight training is a highly effective routine that can greatly improve an athlete's performance. Lifting heavy objects dates back to ancient times when men in Greece would exalt heavy stones to increase strength (Savage 34). These stones have evolved into barbells and cable resistance machines of our modern day. Weightlifting has become widely popular because of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Mr. Universe Competition, professional athletes, and even by the common man that finds results. Today, more than one million people in the United States alone exercise with weights (Savage 3). Lifting weights is the most effective type of exercise because it builds muscle strength, mass, and endurance in athletes.
