When Woodrow Wilson said in 1917 that the United States had entered the Great War in order to “make the world safe for democracy,” that statement was not entirely accurate. Wilson mostly made the decision to enter the war to protect the economic interests of the United States abroad. However, Wilson knew that this could not be the primary reason he gave the nation for going to war. No one would send their son or husband off to get killed based on a few economic policies. So the President had the enormous task of convincing the American people that going to war was the only choice we had. Germany had again started up its policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in an effort to stop Great Britain’s control of the seas. This would also mean that German U-Boats would be sinking merchant vessels that belong to the United States Government and United States Merchants.
