To my dearest mother in law Kelly, We have finally made the decision to leave Ireland and move to the new colony of Canada. Paddy and I are fed up with the continuous droughts. We fear that if there was another drought we wouldn’t be able to survive. Last year was incredibly hard for us and most of the people in Ireland. The potato famine was almost unbearable. Paddy was sick for days until I could get food into him. Also Ireland has become so overpopulated sometimes you feel like a mere ant. We thought that now was the best time to leave. With the industrial revolution and now with the invention of steam power, we decided to take the chance. We heard about the colony of Canada in the newspaper. From what we have read and heard down the grapevine Canada is the place to be. From what I can picture in my mind it will be “The New World”. The newspaper said that we could get a decent sized piece of fertile land for low price. We also thought that if we left now we could escape some of the work that would have to be done in the spring as well. Immigrating could also give us a chance to be independent instead of having to deal with the man who sold us the land. Just think Kelly, it would be a completely fresh start off to a new life. I have heard from some of the women at church that in Canada many people are becoming rich. Just imagine, what if we were to become wealthy?
