For decades the small northern Indian state of Kashmir along the India-Pakistan border has been the scene of much violence between the two foes as they squabble for control of the territory. The predominant religion in India is Hinduism and the major Pakistani religion is Muslim; the differences in the predominant religious beliefs in the two countries are one of the major causes of the conflict. Kashmir is the only Indian state with a Muslim majority and as it is a border state, Pakistan believes that it should control Kashmir. The Kashmir conflict has potentially cataclysmic consequences and intervention from outside countries is needed now to solve the deep-rooted problems, which are the cause of this frightening conflict. To get a full understanding of the Kashmir conflict it is essential to understand the history of the state and it's relations with both India and Pakistan since 1947. It is also imperative to understand the religious and ethnic make-ups of India and Pakistan as those characteristics play a large role in the conflict. That both of the nations now boast nuclear capabilities cannot be ignored either; it is important to assess the potential actions that each faction could take and what far-reaching geopolitical effects they could cause.
