BLACKFOOT NATION
"h The Blackfoot Nation is made up of three tribes who speak the same language and practice the same culture: Pikuni or Piegan, Kainah or Blood, Siksika or Blackfoot proper.
"h The tribes occupied the plains of southeastern Alberta, Canada.
"h Each tribe was broken up into a number of hunting bands, which became the primary political units of the tribe.
"h The blackfoot population was about 5,200 in 1809.
"h Today, 15,000 Blackfoot live on two reserves in Canada.
History
"h Blackfoot probably migrated onto the Plains from the eastern woodlands before contact with whites.
"h Once there, they followed the buffalo, using domestic dogs to carry their belongings.
"h They didnt acquire horses and firearms until the middle of the 18th century.
"h They became the most powerful tribe, pushing their enemies (the Shoshone) west across the Rocky Mountains.
"h Fur trappers were the first to establish trading relationships with the Indians...
