"Predicament of Filipinos in the United States"
The predicament that the author is mentioning to us is the fact that Filipinos in the United States and throughout the world are in a state of uncertainty as far as status socially and economically among the various races. In the beginning San Juan already cites the fact that "We live in a racist society, a racial formation called the United States of America."(p.205). San Juan also quotes from Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin "Racism is to America as Catholicism is to the Vatican." San Juan summarizes the fact that Filipinos in the United States even though a majority among Asians still cannot be distinguished from the Asian Others. People would just assume that Filipinos are either Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.
San Juan also mentions the reasons for an underdeveloped nation of the Philippines is caused by the phenomenon of "brain drain" (p. 207). Majority of professional and educated men and women of the Philippines leave for other countries to seek jobs and permanent careers, leaving it's nation in a continuing state of chaos where San Juan refers to the Philippine economy as a "complete basket case" (p...
