Students and Drugs
Why do students continuously make the decision to involve themselves with drugs? There are many reasons to answer that question, they range from rebellion, to just trying to take the edge off their personality. With my knowledge of the issue, I see students use drugs as an escape from their rather stressful lives. Some students start to look at all their responsibilities as overwhelming, and they need something to settle them down, or to make them feel better for the moment. I also have witnessed different students use drugs as a means of social interaction, or attention; especially if they normally look down on them selves as a not "cool" or "popular" person.
In "Students and Drugs", Herbert Hendin argues that students abuse drugs most commonly out of anger, rebellion, connection with people, or to change their personalities. Many learn through trial and error to find out what exactly they like. In his view some students are just out to defy their parents and authority. Others do drugs because they need a reason to connect with others. Some are users because it takes the edge off their personalities, or calms them down from being stressed...
