Image is composed of highly visual components that can corrupt or influence the way we do things. Image has become a significant aspect in today's society and will continue to dominate in all aspects of our lives. From the text studied; the movies Strictly Ballroom, Platoon, and the article "Blond Ambition" it is clear that the power of image relies on exaggeration, connotation and stereotypes in our society.
The movie platoon directed and written by Oliver Stone is about soldiers fighting in Vietnam. The power of image is shown thoroughly through this movie. At the start we see the protagonist Chris Taylor getting off the plane to be greeted with incessant passing of body bags. Even without showing the actual dead bodies, continuous passing of them has already struck the word 'death' into the viewers mind. The use of body bags connotes that the dead soldiers cannot even be given a proper coffin but instead are being literally thrown in the back of planes to be taken back home. This foreshadows that the movie is going to be filled with unpleasant scenes and images of deaths. Also the lack of respect that these dead fighters get, emphasise that there is myriads of these fallen comrades and that there is not enough time to pay the respect they deserve...
