The Manville Corporation Asbestos Liability
In 1982 Manville filed for chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy act, in order to protect themselves from upwards of 52,000 law suites expected to pay out almost $2 billion. Manville decided on this course of action after the publication of an epidemiological study implicated asbestos (long manufactured in raw form by Manville) as the cause of lung diseases such as, asbetosis, mesothelioma, cancer of the airways, and alimentary system. It should be noted that as far back as the 1st century B.C., inhalation of asbestos caused asbestos workers to become ill.
