Catalase Lab
Abstract:
This lab was designed to see the effects pH has on the enzyme catalase. We did this by mixing .3% hydrogen peroxide with different pH concentrations of the enzyme. When hydrogen peroxide and the enzyme catalase are mixed the catalase attacks the peroxide and creates oxygen gas. We used enzymes with pH's of 2, 6, 7, 8, and 11. We hypothesized that the enzyme would be most active in a neutral solution and would lose effectiveness with a change in pH. We mixed the two agents and measured the amount of gas made, and as suspected there was a substantial difference in the amount of O2 produced by the neutral solution compared to the other solutions. The solutions at the two extremes had very little O2 production.
