I believe that Macbeth was Roman Polanski's reflection on absolute violence and the darkness of a human soul. It is possible for Polanski to be encouraged by the Manson family murders, which claimed as one of its victims Polanski's pregnant wife, Sharon Tate. It's hard to watch that film and not reflect ourselves on this world of violence in which we find ourselves.
It would be a very controversial topic to argue, why Polanski made his Macbeth and Lady Macbeth very young. The tradition has the Macbeth's as an older couple, though there is nothing necessarily in the script, which suggests this, should be the case. But it seems Polanski was drawing a comparison between their youth and the youthfulness of the Manson family killers.
In addition, Playboy Enterprises mogul Hugh Hefner decided to provide the majority of the money for this movie to be produced. Early reports had it that this would be a romantic and exotic film, but Polanski went in other directions. Not everyone was pleased. Yet, Polanski's artistic vision proved more powerful than those with the lesser imaginations who expected something else from the Shakespearean play...
