Dear Sir,
I am so excited that you are interested in learning about the
depiction of the Crucifixion I have chosen for the church! It is a very unique
page from the Book of Hours of Catherine Cleves. I have chosen it because
of the vibrant colors that have been used in this interpretation. Among it's
distinctive qualities are the intricate frame that surround it and the small
mosaics that are a part of the frame. I certainly hope that you approve of
my decision, I will describe to you in detail about many of the formal
aspects of this piece.
A small piece from 1440, this page was made using gold and ink,
pigment on vellum. The materials used to make the piece were appropriate
because of the subject matter involved. It would have been appropriate to
use gold in a depiction of the Crucifixion, because only the best materials
were appropriate in a depiction of Christ. The usage of gold in the piece is
surrounding Christ on the cross. The Virgin, in very dark blue is wearing a
color that is a more expensive pigment than many other colors available...
